And the beat goes on...

>> Sunday, May 15, 2011

Y'all know that I'm not great about blogging anymore. There was a request for an update, and quite frankly I was tired of seeing "Bad Season" when I left blog comments for others. So a mini-update, kind of. It's late, so it will be short.

Honestly, that "Bad Season" has continued and gotten more and more complicated. I'm unsure if I should ride out the storm or grab my girls' hands (and somehow a bunch of paws) and jump ship. It's a debate in my mind daily.

I try to keep all the anger and ugliness on the down low. But like I've mentioned the girls are observant and there's no keeping secrets from them. Plus their lives have changed a bit. It's been a tough adjustment for them, but they are doing well.

When I see them my goal is communication...how was their day? How are their friends? We talk a little about boys (yikes!). Most of all I make sure to tell them I love them as many times as I can. Oh and laughing, the day is a success if we laugh. Let me tell you that it's not always as easy as it seems when you have a preteen going through life's changes. She knows what is happening. But some of the changes are in the mind, the way she thinks and feels, it's hard to prepare for that. We manage though. Bethany is a little chatter-box with a sensitive laugh button. Man that girl is funny! Kelley is more mature, so the girly-giggles aren't as freely flowing as they used to be. She does have a great sense of humor though, there is definitely laughter. Just the way I love it.

Our family does have *big* changes coming soon. Changes that are *good* and that remind us how very *blessed* we are. I'll be sharing that soon, with lots of blogging to follow I'm sure, during an upcoming "Good Season"!

First we need to get through the next 3 1/2 weeks left of school. I think that's all that's left. I can't hardly believe it, 4th grade and 6th grade are so close to being over and out!

Yay Kelley!

>> Wednesday, June 2, 2010

I remember Kelley's first day of Kindergarten like it was yesterday. It was a traumatic day, for me, at least. Even though I didn't take a picture of her on the first day I can still remember exactly what she wore. (And I'm guessing I'm the only mom who didn't take a picture on the first day of school, huh?).

Hard to believe that Kelley's elementary school career will be over in two days.

Today was the 5th grade awards banquet and she ROCKED it! (No pictures again, I'll never learn). She got awards for Academic Achievement and Excellence, Good Citizenship, Eaglevision and Chorus from School. Plus The President's Award for Academic Excellence signed "by" President Obama, and American Citizenship Excellence, with two gold pins.

Unlike the first day of school, I was able to hold back my tears. But they were right there.

We are so proud!

And even though it's gone by so fast, we are so ready to get this summer started!

I'm trying not think about middle school yet, though...yikes!

Consulting a wise source about the future. Rowing my little boat down "denial". And who gave permission for my babies to grow up?

>> Tuesday, April 27, 2010

Kelley beautifying herself on her 3rd birthday.

I asked the Magic 8 Ball if this is a sign of things to come in the near future? The answer...

Kelley has a meeting tonight. At the, um, the darn, ugh, the middle school. Her mama is none too pleased about it. Not that there is anything wrong with the, uh, middle school. The problem is that it's middle school! For reasons I'll be sharing with you, I don't think I'm the proper parent for this type of meeting. I really, really, really, hope Mr. H will take her. And he was raised here, he went to the same school, so he knows his way around already! It is best for Kelley. Tonight I'd need to be full of confidence. To stay cool under pressure. To encourage Kelley to be brave. Because middle school is exciting! A big step up from elementary school! A really new and fun and grown up adventure! But me? Nooo. I'm really busy rowing my little boat down "denial".

Yes, my firstborn baby, my sweet little lamb is growing up. She is wrapping up her years at her elementary school. And, I just can't quite seem to accept it. At all. Her Mammie and I used to joke about how we needed to find some sort of "stunt growth juice" every time one of the girls hit yet another milestone. Our search has been unsuccessful. Why exactly do our children have to go and grow up? I mean, I have no problems at all with them staying little. Any age would do. But this growing up stuff? It's going too far.

Kelley is definitely pushing the limits now. Middle school! Hmpf.

I remember when it was time for kindergarten like it was just yesterday. I was in the same little boat rowing down "denial". I didn't want her to start kindergarten. That's a sure way for her to grow up. No lie, I put off enrolling her into kindergarten until about the last minute. I struggled with it. Gosh did I ever struggle. The only thing that helped was when we found out who her teacher was going to be. I knew her, our children attended the same preschool. She's a very sweet person and I did feel that Kelley got the best teacher she could have. But I still didn't get why she had to continue to grow, growing to the point of going to kindergarten.

The first day of school was rough for us. We all went, Mr. H, Bethany, Mammie, Papa, me. Oh and Kelley, too. I was too stressed out to even think of taking a picture of her on the first day of school. But I still remember what she wore. And how tiny she was. Little lamb isn't just tiny, she's the smallest girl in her grade. She was so brave that day. Much braver than I was. I don't even think she cried. Can't speak for the rest of the family. After we got her settled into her classroom, we walked solemnly back to our cars and went our different ways. I didn't dare try to speak, cause that little boat of mine? It was about to capsize.

I drove away and that was pretty hard to do. Bethany was with me and we were on our way to her preschool and my job. This was back in the days when they got along. Bethany called Kelley "sissy". As we were driving, it was quiet. But if you know anything about Bethany, you will know that she and quiet don't happen often. Then she said it "I miss my sissy", and all I could barely choke out was "me too". And then there were tears, not sure which one of us started it but we were having a full blown cry. Not the sweet kind with a little tear here and there. No this was an ugly cry. You know the kind.

We did make it through the first week. And then had Hurricane Charley come to visit that Friday night. As a result, schools were closed the entire next week. So if the first day of Kelley's kindergarten wasn't enough, we had to pretty much start over. By then Kelley knew what school was about and that was when she started to cry.

So here we are with Kelley starting middle school in August. Middle. School. I want to make it stop before it starts. I remember middle school. Kelley is going to be spending her day around kids who are middle schoolers. Some of them are even going to be teens! She's still the tiniest girl in her grade. She's going to have to pass in the halls between classes in a mob of kids. Big kids. Teens!

Think back to your middle school years...do you remember the kind of things that happened? Many boys and girls actually started "going out" or whatever the name is these days for first relationships. Thank goodness Kelley isn't overly interested in boys. Yet. They hold hands and write sappy love notes to each other. They might even have "their song". I'm starting to feel a little woozy. Some have their first real kiss and their first broken hearts.

remember we rescued a litter of kittens from my parents yard back in july? our intentions were always to find good homes for the kittens. i have done the same thing many times before. not everyone is a cat person, i know. if you aren't one i hope you will hang out to read this though. if you are a cat owner i hope this will inspire you to spay/neuter your pets if you haven't already.

the kittens to *us* are really cute, all but one a variation of orange with the last one being a beautiful cream and white color with dark rust colored eyes. i've never seen a cat like that before. we figured that it would be easy to find homes for them. as time went on, we would learn otherwise. we had not found one home. not a one. i contacted the humane society for help, perhaps they could advertise while we kept them as "foster kitties". the humane society was not able to help, they had too many cats, and nobody was adopting them. and as i look around there are always stray cats everywhere we go. too many cats. so this is where i ask that you please spay/neuter your pets!

as time went on, without adopting families anywhere on the horizon, the kittens got older. we had them vaccinated and neutered and spayed. i was hopeful that with all of the "work" out of the way that people, anyone, would now be interested. no such luck.

the girls of course have become quite attached to the kittens. ok, we all have. bethany definitely has "her" kitten. she doesn't have her own pet and i had promised her that she could keep her guy. kelley has a pet, the princess pug daisy may. so there was no promise of a kitten for her. but regardless she also had "her" guy-the beautiful cream kitten.

they have worked very hard at advertising! and remained strong when they were told that we just needed to drop the kittens off at the humane society. no, we are definitely going to find them good homes. it's not their fault they were born into this world as homeless strays.

yesterday, their efforts paid off. a sweet family wanted a kitten. it was the wife's birthday and the husband was getting the kitten for her. they also have a little girl. when it was time for him to pick out a kitten, i knew in my heart which one he was going to pick...kelley's little guy. they went to pick up a crate and supplies and came back for the kitten. kelley watched from the window as mr. h brought the kitten to them, helped pack him up (he had a favorite blanket which we sent with him), and they drove away. there were tears. lots of tears. some were mine.

when the girls had a moment to calm down, i talked with them. reassuring them that this was the best possible outcome for this kitten. he'll have his own family-not one he has to share with his brothers and sisters. and a little girl to sneak him into bed with her as kelley did many nights. i told them how proud i was of them. and that i hoped this would be the start of something good, helping God's little creatures who are born into hard lives. like i've mentioned, i have rescued lots of little ones and helped them on their way to a good life. it started when i was just a little girl and continues on. and now i know that there will be two more helpers out there.

one home down, a few more to go!

i have got to stop slacking...(and whoa do i foresee trouble)

>> Saturday, December 12, 2009

seriously. i mean i am a total slacker about lots of things-and i'm ok with that. one thing i've been pretty good at though is capturing moments with the camera. yep, i usually take pictures aplenty. i don't make those cute scrapbooks, that would be way too much work. thanks to mammie, kelley and bethany do have their own photo albums. though with the digital age i'm lucky to get prints made. in fact the summer i was sick i actually caught up with five years of pictures into each album. lately though i just plain suck. even when i manage to take pictures i haven't blogged them, uploaded to facebook, nothing. if i don't change my ways, the next current pictures you all see may be when the girls are teenagers. (oh holey crow, one day we're going to have two teenage daughters...at the same time!)

so really i need to get busy. for example i mentioned my complete lack of recording kelley's concert last night. and there was no excuse! i even have one of those flip video camera thingies. well i haven't opened it and figured it out yet. see? slacker.

what has me thinking of this now though is bethany. i can't tell you how many times i gaze at that child and try to figure out how i helped create her! forgive me for this, but you all will understand...cause aren't all of our children just gorgeous? yes they are. bethany. wow. long naturally curly hair, big blue eyes and teeny tiny. not a freckle on her face. really i'm thinking mr. heather gets A LOT of credit here. and she has this style about her. when i was her age, picture chubby, freckles, ugly dresses from kmart (sorry mammie and papa), and likely a kinky poodle curl perm. not to leave kelley out, because she is way too pretty for me to not be wowed when i get to claim helping create her as well. each day they are growing more and more into these cute little sassy girls. and i'm so *proud* to be their mommy.

so bethany today... gosh i wished i had snapped a picture of her before she left today with her papa. a cute little skort outfit which she was all legs in. a snow cap (yes in florida) perched perfectly on her head of curls. pink clogs. i'm just giggling now thinking about how darn cute she looked! and kicking myself for being such a slacker. fortunately she puts together these cute little outfits all the time so i will take some pictures someday soon. and of kelley, too. kelley's style is a bit more sophisticated and she's got a cute new haircut.

and back to that teenager thing? mr. heather and i are going to be in so much trouble!

if i could save time in a bottle...

gosh time is moving so fast! is it just me or do you all feel that life is whizzing by way too quickly? it seems worse during the holiday season. every year there are so many things i want to do for christmas and every year the day comes and goes before i'm ready for it. this year is proving to be no exception.

y'all we haven't even decorated! that is terrible. usually we decorate the weekend after thanksgiving. we had decided this year to have a smaller tree and mr. heather was going to have a new "theme". just haven't gotten around to it yet. he also needs to replace our outside decorations as our old ones sort of croaked after last christmas. hopefully we can get it done this weekend. that's the plan anyway.

every year i intend to watch "it's a wonderful life". i've never seen it, i have it, but again time rushes by before i have a chance to sit and watch it. maybe i will actually accomplish that goal this year. we'll see.

obviously i survived the week of chaos. there were so many things scheduled that it made my head spin. i did reschedule a doctor's appointment because school snuck in another early release day. (which i have to complain is getting ridiculous!) despite that we added in another school function with kelley's chorus and chimes concert last night.

i wish we'd recorded the concert as it was really good! it was so nice-they had real christmas carols instead of made up "holiday" songs. is christmas coming back en vogue? i hope so. it was getting out of hand if you ask me, especially when the christmas tree box was labeled "holiday tree". but i digress...

kelley did really great! but seeing her up there with all of the other kids made me realize how tiny she is. it seemed like she's atleast half a foot, if not more, shorter than everyone else. between that and her quiet nature i'm always afraid she's going to get pushed around. she does hold her own pretty well though. thinking that she's going to middle school next year just blows my mind!

seriously, time is going by way too quickly!

short answers

>> Tuesday, November 10, 2009

i saw this idea on the kahrs 6 pack blog and thought i'd give it a try! click on the short answers button to participate or read other answers. the deal is every tuesday there will be 5 random questions to ask your kids. and as every mommy knows...you never know what's going to come out of those sweet little mouths.

bethany (b) age 8 1/2 and kelley (k) age 10 are sharing their answers. i didn't ask them together, so i'd get answers that were original. this should be interesting and funny!

what's better, butter or cheese?

b-butter, because it's yummy on bread.

k-cheese, because it goes good on mac and cheese.

how are doughnuts made?

b-well, they are made by dough and different jellies sometimes. and they are made with duh, duh-duh, duuuhh...glaze!

k-uh, i'm thinking. they're made with dough, put in a mold shaped like a doughnut and filled with different fillings and toppings.

why do trees change colors in the fall? (keep in mind we live in florida and have palm trees. those darn things never change colors)

b-because it gets cold.

k-because the weather gets colder and it makes the leaves get dead.

what do broccoli, carrots and cucumbers all have in common?

b-they all have green-ness on them, they are all vegetables and they all taste disgusting. (but bethany, carrots are orange. well they still have green-ness on top before you cut it off)

k-they're all icky and supposed to be healthy. animals love them, but i don't.

what's a tapestry?

b-um, why do you type everything i say? why? i have no idea whatsoever.

k-a tapestry? a place where they tap on people? or make tape?

NaBloPoMo Day 9...Bullet Style

>> Monday, November 9, 2009

  • today has been an off day and has left me low on inspiration, ergo the bullets.

  • mondays are my "sleep in" day. some may think i sleep in every day but i don't. the other six days i set an alarm, on mondays i don't.
  • i'll just say that i slept in way too late, even for me, so for normal people i slept in ridiculously late.

  • hence the off day.

  • i told y'all about kelley's report card, which if you don't remember, was excellent!

  • but also mentioned some apprehension about bethany's. her progress report was not great. i don't even think i could say it was good. it was bad enough that she had many restrictions for the remainder of the grading period.

  • i am so excited to report that bethany's report card was pretty darn awesome!

  • bethany doesn't work up to her potential, but she does have the potential.

  • a pleasant surprise was that her teacher gave a good report about bethany's behavior! she's not a bad kid, but she's bethany, and that can be challenging. despite the sometimes hard times i wouldn't ever want her to change who she is. but with this comes the chance of bad behavior reports.

  • mr. h has been preparing for something the past year or so. he calls it "disaster preparedness"...natural disaster, economic collapse, civil unrest and don't tell him i told you this, zombie attacks.

  • he stockpiles. we have a lot of various things stockpiled. which is great except our house is small and already cramped.

  • i think if he was really clever he could build an underground bomb shelter. if nothing else it would be a good place to store his stockpiles.

  • his current quest is to find long shelf-life ways to store food. currently, he is playing with his new food dehydrator.

  • if a crisis ever happens, feel free to come on over!

  • moving along...i still haven't found any homes for the kittens.

  • one friend is interested in a cat to rid her barn of vermin. we are actually thinking that instead of the kittens, (in)vader may be a good match. he has claws (extra ones too-remember he's a hemingway. sort of). and lately he has been trying to get outside with every opportunity he finds. he would have to give up the luxuries of air conditioning and couches, etc. but we are considering this option.

  • ferris and theo are really encouraging this. (in)vader is so sweet, except to them.

  • i'm thrilled to hear the news that it seems stellan's heart ablation was a success!

  • my prayers will continue, asking our Lord to make this success everlasting.

  • and that sums up my thoughts on this off day.

siblings...the best laid plans

>> Thursday, November 5, 2009

do you have siblings? were you close with them while growing up? how about now?

me? i'm an only child. as a kid i hated it. it took me many, many hopeful years to realize that brothers and sisters just weren't going to happen. i still am sad about not having a sibling. it was lonely then and it is still lonely now.

being an only child certainly did come with benefits. there was only one of me, so things stretched a little further and i didn't go without. in fact, i usually ended up with the things i wanted. (there are a few things i didn't get that are now inside family jokes). i did get my dream car for my 16th birthday. fortunately my dream car was an old one and less expensive than other cars. if i had wanted a bmw or something like that, i would have been out of luck. my parents felt strongly about being able to send me to college. they both had to work their way through college on their own. had i chosen a traditional wedding, i'm really sure they would have made it a beautiful occasion. so it seems that when they decided to just have me, their life experiences played a big part in it. they wanted to offer me so much opportunity and they did. (thanks mom and dad i love you both so much!)

but at the other end i was the only one with which things were judged. meaning, my parents at a time, thought i was on "the highway to hell". i think that they now maybe realize i was just a normal kid/teen. they just had nothing to compare me against. and really i ended up turning out ok.

my friends all had siblings. and one of my bestest of friends was the middle of three daughters. ever have one of those friends that seemed perfect, the whole family seemed perfect, and you really wanted to be part of that family? yep, that's how i viewed them. i'm really lucky and happy that even now after all of these years, i'm in touch with all three sisters. i know they've had their bumps along the way. but to me they will always be the "perfect family".

fast forward to my family. i definitely wanted three kids, girls, that were fairly close in age. i admit it, i wanted my family to resemble the family of my friend. kelley and bethany are close in age (18 months apart). my hope for them was that they would be instant BFF's. i'll admit that even after all these years (the girls are almost 9 and 10 1/2) i have baby fever like there's been a rabid outbreak. however, having another is not likely to happen. mr. h is just not on board with that idea.

so back to siblings. kelley and bethany. close in age, both girls, the best of friends. right? no. wrong. at best this only lasted through the preschool age when they called each other "sissy" for sister. sometime after that it became a love/hate relationship which it remains to this day. we have issues that i never even dreamed of. not quite to the point of wearing each others clothes without permission, but we're getting there. right now the biggest quarrel involves friends. "but she was my friend first!". if i had a dollar for every time i've heard that...

i do anticipate (hope) that this will change next year. this will be the first time in four years that they will be attending different schools, different busses (and if they had their way, living in different states). we also are anticipating the possibility for them to have their own rooms in the coming future. yes, maybe this will all help.

remember the stories of our grandparents and great-grandparents "when i was your age, i had to walk ten miles to school, uphill, in snow, with hand me down shoes"? here it sounds more like "when i was your age, i didn't have a sister to play with and be friends with. it was lonely. when i played board games, i had to play the left hand against the right hand"!

*sigh* if only they realized how nice it could be to have each other...

My Stick Family from WiddlyTinks.com

p.s. remember "little baby girl" is only part of my dream family. no, i'm not trying to tell you all any news. =)

Super Snapshot Saturday (oops a day late!)

>> Sunday, November 1, 2009

my bloggy friend angel hosts this blog carnival every saturday. be sure to check out her blog for more super snapshots!

this theme was holidays. yesterday was a holiday which is why i'm a day late. instead of sharing those pictures now, i thought it would be a great time to share some of my favorites from Christmas over the years. can you believe it's time to start thinking Christmas? i've already started shopping!

i would love to scan all of our pictures with santa, but not because they are great pictures...it's because they are not great pictures! our santa pictures never fail to bring a laugh because of kelley and bethany and their expressions. i've wondered if they save these special expressions over the year especially for santa? here is their first picture with santa and it is the most normal of them all. bethany is obviously not happy, but the tears in her eyes are kind of sweet.

this winter wonderland is my favorite holiday picture of all time! my friend cindy helped create this for our Christmas cards a few years ago. she really brought magic to a picture that was originally taken on a hot and sunny afternoon in florida!

i guess you could call us quiverfull

>> Saturday, October 31, 2009

***this blog post has been sitting unpublished for several days now mostly waiting for pictures to be added. but also because i'm trying to anticipate the reaction this will get. my intention? just a cute little (or big) history of why i could very well end up as "the old lady with the cats". the situation we have right now is not ideal. and i hope that it is very much temporary! also this is in no way meant to offend large families. i am not the product of one, even though having siblings and a large family have been life long desires of mine. and we are not in the situation to have many more children, for several reasons. one? you will soon see!***

i'd never heard of the term "quiverfull" until the duggar family became popular. and even then i wasn't quite sure of the exact meaning so i glanced at wikipedia. according to the first little blurb it says that "children should be received eagerly as blessings from God". and i definitely do agree with that. but ok it's true we don't have a quiverfull of children. and although i really do want a "large" family, to me that means three or four children. not exactly very duggar-esque.

however, i also view animals as blessings from God too! sometimes i prefer them to humans as they never lie or cheat. pets just warm my heart and make me smile because they are true, pure and full of love. i definitely believe the studies that say pets are good for you. ever been comforted by puppy kisses or kitty purrs? now i won't say that my pets never get grumpy, they do! especially theo who often walks around the house complaining about this whole quiverfull mentality i seem to have. which i guess i should explain.

i've always been an animal lover. my dad says i've adopted strays my whole life (though he actually has included some people as strays too, but that's a whole other story), and i have rescued many, many strays in my lifetime. some i've kept as my own pets and some like a few litters of kittens i've rescued from the elements i've worked hard to find them good homes. this is no easy task. all in all, i've always had pets. and for a few years it was surprising because i had only one pet, ferris. he's my 16 year old best buddy, a manx cat that i adopted from animal control when he was only 5 weeks old. i say my best buddy because he is! he's been with me for my entire adult life, all the ups and downs, growing, maturing, college, working, boyfriends, marriage, kids, sickness, etc. not to mention all of the pets and strays that have come and gone. ferris has seen it all!

about four years ago or so theo joined us. a little kitten in the yard who was hungry and getting wet when it started to rain. of course we brought him in. he quickly bonded with mr. h and became "his" cat named theo. (the bonding could explain the grumpies theo is prone to). for the next few years it was just the two cat guys.

kelley did have a puppy from the humane society for a little while, but no matter what we did bethany was terrified of him. and like lots of "mutts" he got pretty big which made bethany even more scared. fortunately he found another good home. we had a few hamsters who were quite sweet but they are now running on the big hamster wheel in the sky.

kelley still desperately wanted a puppy. she first asked when she was just 2. on her eighth birthday she got daisy, who we all adore and is the "pug princess". i have to brag about daisy...puppies to me are A LOT of work. i've had one who seriously was more of a challenge than a newborn! not daisy though. she was easy to housetrain. she went through a flip flop chewing phase but even that passed quickly. so i don't know if it's daisy or pugs in general. i just know that our princess is the best.dog.ever. the boys-ferris and theo didn't mind her at all. we then became a nice little family with not too many pets. nice and normal.

last december we acquired another cat. he belonged to a patient of mr. h's who had passed away. the family said that mr. h was the man's favorite nurse and asked if we would like to have the cat. (i have to mention that i was always interested in hemingway cats-the ones with extra digits that are often found in key west at ernest hemingway's estate. and it turns out that this cat had extra digits though i'm not sure if he is a hemingway cat-he actually has six digits on all but one paw and seven on the other! and a few other oddities...also a manx and has the strangest ears i've ever seen-they are curled. he's really a sight to see!). so vader came to home to stay. we didn't name him, i'm not sure if it's from darth vader or not. but according to ferris and theo it is short for IN-vader. yep, after all that ferris has tolerated he drew the line with vader. theo doesn't like him and the grumpies have gotten worse. the feeling is mutual, vader doesn't like them either. but to us and even daisy he is completely lovey-dovey.

ok so now we're getting a bit packed. our house is small-it was my "batchelorette pad". we don't have a farm and really i'm a pretty big believer that house cats belong in the house. but everybody claims "their" spot and it works out. sort of. but we're not at quiverfull yet, not anywhere close!

have you ever told your children something that has come back to get you? well, i sure have. kelley and bethany often mentioned that they would like a turtle. i love turtles as well. and i told the girls that if they ever found a turtle that was in trouble they could bring it home. after clarifying that the huge tortoises that they see from time to time were not included, i figured this would never happen. right? nope! not in my life. the girls rescued an itty bitty tortoise that was about to be eaten by a friend's dog. of course! so they brought the little thing home and true to my word, we kept it. we never did see any "missing" signs, so for now alex or speedy (nobody can stick with one name) resides with us.

it's here that i have to mention that i've always adored orange cats. never had one though. since i've brought this up, i'm sure you realize that is all about to change. oh dear has it changed! my parents noticed a very small orange cat hanging around their yard. she was probably still even a kitten, as much as she could be. and then her belly started to grow, and grow. oh no! she couldn't be pregnant could she? she was much too young. then her big belly was gone. we figured she miscarried the babies. my parent's neighbor had been trying to catch the cat to keep, but they were unsuccessful and ended up moving. some time later that's when we saw kittens, they had survived. five, adorable, tiny, orange kittens! and some time after that the neighbors came back and the mom cat was gone. we guessed that they finally got her, which was great! except for the babies left behind. i guess they didn't realize that she had babies.

this was no problem for me. my resume boasts several litters of kittens that i rescued and found homes for. so that's exactly what i was going to do. except wow, they weren't too friendly or brave. i had to go back and forth many times to catch them all. and i did get all of them except for one. meanwhile back at home we had four little guys (yep all boys) sequestered. they were not at all happy. first order of business was getting rid of fleas and other gross things that wild kittens get. yuck. but we got rid of those. then the challenge of eating, they were very young and i believe still nursing when their mom disappeared. got them eating. they took right to the litterbox. so it was then all about teaching them that we weren't going to eat them and that we were nice. this was a slow process. it was sad though, as we knew there was one kitten left and how scary for that kitten-lost mommy and brothers. i tried and tried to get that kitten. and i failed. my mom however (with my dad's advice) got her! yes she was the only girl. she was terrified, but reuniting with her brothers was so sweet!

now of course the plan was that after we got them socialized a bit that i was going to find homes for them. that would be easy, they are adorable! bethany did bond with one she named julian and since she didn't have her "own" pet like the rest of us, i figured what the heck-we'll let her keep her julian. the rest got names too. gabriel, eli, lexi and, and, well the last one we can't decide on a name for. he's the only one who isn't orange. he's a beautiful cream sort of color that i've never seen before, with dark rusty colored eyes. kelley named him cream puff. mr. h really likes the little guy and named him spooky. and though we call him all of those names, he's most often called pooky. lexi, the only girl and last to join us, is super shy. really shy. in fact after months she is just now comfortable and friendly. poor thing really had a hard time. she's super sweet now and very spoiled.

you may have noticed that i said "months" and that is no mistake. remember how i was easily going to find all of these kittens homes? well, it's not been easy. i have found not one home. not a one! we have mostly tried word of mouth. after it became clear that wasn't going to work i called the humane society. not what i wanted to do, but i had to do something. well that was a bust too. they didn't exactly say no they won't take the kittens. but they did tell me that they had so many kittens and cats that they were completely overloaded and not having any luck with adoptions. my heart sank. so i asked for suggestions and mentioned placing an ad in the paper. they told me not to do that because cruel people tend to answer ads for free kittens and do all sorts of awful things to them-using them as lab animals, satanic rituals or just all around horrible things. oh.my.gosh. by the time i hung up i was on the verge of tears. i just can't imagine these sweet babies being hurt. i refuse to call animal control as i've read too many articles in the paper about their adoption vs. put down ratios. i've called the vets in town. and i've even called animal rescue places out of town. so right now i'm stuck. we're stuck. if you get nothing else out of this long, rambling story of mine-please get this: spay and neuter your pets!

so now we are officially a quiverfull family. it's going ok. the girls think it's the coolest thing ever. daisy doesn't mind them at all. ferris has seen it all, nothing phases him. theo is grumpy and often heard saying all sorts of bad words in cat language-which is kind of cute. vader, poor vader. well he doesn't care for the grown cats at all but i do believe that he feels like he is in charge of the kittens. a surrogate mom maybe? he herds them around, bathes them, it's all very sweet. but i can tell that like any "mom" with five kids he is absolutely worn out. i try to tell him that he doesn't have to be in charge of them but he doesn't seem to understand that. mr. h grumbles about them half of the time and then spoils them the other half.

recently all of the kittens received their vaccinations and were spayed/neutered. wow! that whole thing cost a small fortune. ha-ha maybe i need to set up a "donate" button! but of course it was the necessary thing to do. my hope is that the kittens will be more appealing to people if all of the vet stuff is taken care of already. atleast i tell myself that. we are keeping the makers of kitten and cat chow and cat litter in business. and if only i got paid for my manual labor of litterbox duty...

sometimes there's a lot of work and it can sure be tough...

but the good news is that every once in awhile an unusual friendship is made.

and there's always a laugh to be had!

so there you have it, we are quiverfull!

would anyone like a kitten?

some past funnies

blogging is really starting to take some time. i have a few posts that i've been working on for several days now. in the meantime, i came across some funnies from my caring bridge journal and thought i'd share them. these little jewels were from 2007. kids really do crack me up!

***

So Kelley thought she'd be slick and write an answer to a test on her shoe. It didn't all fit so she abbreviated it. She must've thought she was just too smart to actually come up with something like that. Unfortunately, she couldn't remember what the abbreviation stood for and she missed the question anyway. It was a good laugh!

(i have saved the shoe and here it is...)

dinner time conversation...

Picky Kelley who does not eat meat is trying steak for the first time.

Bethany: "Hey Kelley did you know steak comes from cows? You're tasting cows. Dead ones!"

and a cute little picture of part of our "crew". one of the posts i'm working on is telling this story...

hope this post gave you a giggle. and stayed tuned for new posts...including awards!!!

blossoming kelley

>> Friday, October 23, 2009

being a 5th grader is definitely agreeing with kelley. my quiet little lamb is blossoming more and more with each day!

the first quarter of the year has not even ended and so far here are a few of kelley's accomplishments...

  • she auditioned for chorus in public and was selected.

  • she also auditioned for hand bells, the xylophone, and all things percussion and was selected.

  • today she was selected to be the class representative for "eaglevision" the in-school daily television news program for the second quarter.

report cards are not out yet, but her progress report was excellent!

we are so very proud of kelley! and even better, she is proud of herself!

now that she's going to be a bit of a school t.v. celebrity, i think she might need a day of pampering. i'm thinking a new haircut and a manicure!

i need to share a family secret now, it's about the hand bells and all things percussion, and why i am especially excited about this! when my mom was in band she had to play the trumpet but she really wanted to play the clarinet. when it was my time for band i really wanted to play the drums. mom made me play the clarinet. it's kind of an on-going joke that my child would be a drummer no matter what. i was never in the marching band as the clarinet was just not my passion. but any time i hear a drum line i get the chills. and we are now on the way to kelley becoming a drummer!

***here is where i would add a recent picture of my sweet blossom. unfortunately the new kelley isn't so cooperative with pictures. trying to get a smiley picture? well that might have to be the next accomplishment we work on***

my sweet little lamb

one of the great things about being a mom is watching my girls grow and blossom!

kelley recently decided to join chorus at school. this was super exciting, but when i read that there would be try outs and that kelley would have to sing alone infront of a group i wasn't so sure she'd want to do it. and when she realized the same she was pretty nervous. not only is she like me and shy, but she's never had any type of training with singing.

she did it though! and got herself a spot in the chorus group!

i'm so proud of kelley!!!

bullet friday-the kelley morgan version...

>> Friday, July 24, 2009

  • a week ago kelley celebrated her 10th birthday, i can not believe that my baby is 10!

  • her birth day occurred on my 25th birthday, this was in no way planned...usually first babies are late and kelley was 10 days early.

  • i did not want an epidural or any pain meds during the delivery. my water broke but i wasn't really having contractions. i was dilated 2 cm when they started the pitocin and it was 8am.

  • by 9am i was asking for an epidural, so disappointed in myself...thinking i'd probably have another 12 hours of labor and i was already wimping out.

  • they went ahead and checked again just to see, and i was suddenly 9cm-talk about relief!

  • at 9:32am my little lamb was born, and i succeeded in my quest of no pain meds or epidural!

  • my eyes were closed when i heard kelley's first cry, it was tiny like that of a little lamb. i imagined she would be tiny as well...i was shocked to see my baby for the first time and she was 7 pounds 2 ounces.

  • kelley was always kelley. we don't remember a time of wondering if she was going to be a boy or girl, or having a list of names to choose from. she was our baby girl kelley, kelley from the belly.

  • she still has a little lamb's voice at age 10.

  • kelley has blossomed into a beautiful, smart and caring girl.

  • we learn something new from her every day, her wisdom knows no bounds.

  • kelley loves Jesus and Jesus loves kelley.

  • she also loves animals and hopes to work with animals for her career, i'm thinking she would make a great veterinarian.

  • kelley is a small girl, but she definitely isn't a push-over.

  • in fact she can be very stubborn.

  • she is also very honest, this proves to be a challenge with her having a sister capable of great sneakiness.

  • she's an awesome sister.

  • and she's a blessing to have as a daughter...the best birthday present ever!

are you smarter than a 4th grader?

>> Wednesday, January 28, 2009

i am not so sure that i am. i'll let you decide.

now one thing that i am anal about is spelling...i am like the spelling bee. (this does NOT mean that i don't make typos-i do. even more with having chemobrain. and if i let one slip and don't catch it til after i hit "submit", a mini-anxiety attack occurs.)

punctuation? grammar? i fail miserably at both. and now i'm wondering if vocabulary isn't yet another of one of my weak points.

kelley who is in 4th grade has not been applying herself in school the way she should. this year she is a program that is not exactly gifted-but is supposed to be more challenging. she's a smart girl and we think it's kind of a big deal. last year she even won an award for having the best scores on the standardized testing they do. not that we worry so much about that-but she did win a nice savings bond.

needless to say, we are not exactly thrilled with her slacking in school. and you can imagine the utter shock and disgust on my face when she started failing her SPELLING tests! i just can not have this. she doesn't bring home spelling word lists and says that the teacher only wants them to study the words in class. now i'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, but no i don't believe it for a second. and i call her on it.

so she says to me "spelling tests are such drudgery". huh? i'm going to throw myself out there and tell you that i wasn't quite sure what the word drudgery meant. i could have guessed, but instead looked it up on the online dictionary. (which meant that i actually knew how to SPELL the word-cause i'm the bee and all).

and then i asked miss kelley big-brain if SHE could spell drudgery. and HA! she couldn't. no more spelling test games around here...she knows she best come home with THE list tomorrow or i will get it myself.

i'm thinking it wouldn't hurt for me to play a little more of the "free rice" game that i have on my blog.

and incase you don't know what the word drudgery means, here ya go:

drudg⋅er⋅y   menial, distasteful, dull, or hard work.
