Hi Heather,
I saw your question about your cat on MckMamas forum, but I'm not signed up there and so cannot respond. I hope you don't mind me using your personal blog to answer your question... (I don't mind at all if you delete it after reading!!)
I had a beloved cat who also developed hyperthyroidism in old age (around 16), who was super skinny and allllways hungry. Just to let you know, we treated him with the drug treatment and we did see an improvement, although it was not massive, he still seemed very skinny, but looked more healthy. Anyway, he (and his twin brother - so sad!) both died earlier this year (I miss them!) BUT they made it to the good age of 18. The one with hyperthyroidism continued for 2 years on the drugs so I would recommend you at least give them a try - if he experiences terrible side effects (my cat didn't seem to) you can always stop.
Good luck! I really hope you can find something to help him improve. In the meantime, give him a cuddle from me!
